Chant 101: Neumes and More
In this two-hour workshop, participants will bring a piece of chant to life.
Explore the sound world of the middle ages, experience the pure ringing sound of a truly perfect fifth, and feel in your body when something is truly in tune. We’ll work in small groups, singing without conductors so that everyone works on listening and leadership skills. By exploring fluid shapes and contours of musical phrases, participants will develop a more expressive musicality they can bring to all their future music-making.
This workshop is geared toward choral conductors and singers from the amateur to professional level. Ideally, amateur singers should have some music-reading ability.
Singing Hildegard
The only poet-composer of her time to write lyrics in free verse, Hildegard von Bingen wrote works of surprising freedom of expression, daring ranges, and melodic complexity rarely seen in Gregorian chant.
Singing from a modified version of the original notation, participants will discover how older notations can serve the music in a way modern transcriptions cannot. We’ll experiment with singing against a drone to find how attention to modal tuning makes this music alive and powerful. We’ll also cover ensemble sound blend, text interpretation, and diction with regional pronunciation of Latin.
This workshop is geared toward experienced singers, amateur and professional, who read music and have some knowledge of music theory, with an ideal group size of 3-12.

Introduction to Medieval Music (with Meravelha)
Teri and the musicians of Meravelha offer an interactive presentation on the evolution of Western Music from 1000-1450. In addition to the construction of music and common instruments used at the time, we will explore cultural ideas about music, common subjects and themes of songs, and the place and purpose of music in medieval society.
